Viktor Navorski arrives in New York from his Eastern European homeland, only to learn that he no longer has a country. While flying across the Atlantic, his country has fallen into civil war, and by the time he has landed, his country is no longer recognized by United States. Navorski is a man with no country. Not only is he not allowed to return home, he is not allowed to leave the airport.
